The Department of Sociology at Birangana Sati Sadhani Rajyik Vishwavidyalaya (BSSRV), in collaboration with the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), BSSRV, celebrated ‘World Environment Day’ on 5th June 2024. The event was graced by the presence of Dr. Kalyan Sonowal (Ph.D., Jawaharlal Nehru University), an Independent Researcher from Assam, who delivered an academically stimulating lecture on ‘Media and Sustainable Development: An Environmental Perspective.’ In the lecture moderated by Shofiul Alom Pathan, Assistant Professor, Department of Sociology, Dr Partha Pratim Borah, Head In-Charge, Department of Sociology, highlighted the necessity of a global approach in tackling the environmental issues considering the global nature of the problem. In the special lecture, Dr Sonowal lucidly depicted the current scenario of environmental destruction, drawing examples from different parts of the country and describing the role of media in presenting the news. The active participation of teachers, research scholars, and students from the different Departments of the university in the discussion after the lecture was a testament to their dedication and interest in the topic. Pratyush Proteem Borah, a research scholar at the Department of Sociology, gave a vote of thanks at the end of the lecture. As a part of Environment Day, the university fraternity also participated in a plantation drive at the permanent site of the university.
